The NHS Alliance welcomes the latest announcement of new guidance for the remuneration of Professional Executive Committee (PEC) members in Primary Care Trusts. The Alliance is pleased and reassured to see the implementation of the recommendations that came out of the consultation document Primary Care Trust Professional Executive Committees: Fit for the Future.

This announcement highlights the importance of clinical leadership within PCTs and their equivalence with senior management teams within the organisation.

Dr Peter Reader, who lead the PEC consultation on behalf of the Department of Health and facilitates the NHS Alliance PEC Chair Network, said:

"It is very reassuring to see the importance of clinical leadership appropriately placed and remunerated within PCTs. The flexibility that is contained within the guidance that remuneration should reflect responsibility and role, and the stipulation that individuals should not loose out financially by taking a clinical leadership career path is most welcome.

"The Alliance has always been at the forefront of spreading best practice across PCTs and we shall be monitoring and sharing information across PCTs on how PECs are developing and delivering."

The NHS Alliance is the independent body that represents primary care. Its membership includes PCTs, GP practices and other primary care organisations. Individual members include clinicians, managers and non-executives. The Alliance's multi-professional base means it is the only organisation that is able to bring PCTs and practices together.
