Thomas Temple, Executive Vice President and CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA), is the 2011 recipient of the American Pharmacists Association's (APhA) Hugo H. Schaefer Award. Temple was chosen for his leadership of a well-integrated state organization of community and institutional pharmacy practitioners and dedication to serving the profession. Other noteworthy recognitions include a commitment to payment reform, the implementation of broad based pharmaceutical care and dedication to the mentoring and development of student pharmacists.

Established by APhA in 1964 in honor of its long time treasurer, the award recognizes outstanding voluntary contributions to the organization, the profession and society. The award will be bestowed upon Temple at APhA's Annual Meeting and Exposition in Seattle, Wash., March 25-28, 2011. APhA's awards program is pharmacy's most comprehensive recognition program.

One of the nomination letters received noted, "Tom's greatest contribution to society, our profession and APhA is his commitment to developing leaders in all walks of life. There exists a veritable legion of pharmacists, pharmacy students and every day people he has mentored, befriended, encouraged and guided. Tom's consistent messaging about the value of pride in our profession positively impacts all in the pharmacy world, and it rings true even to those outside our line of work."

Another colleague commented, "Under Tom's leadership and guidance, the Iowa Pharmacy Association has initiated many innovations often replicated in other states, and he has been instrumental in pioneering efforts to enhance the way pharmacists serve their patients and contribute to high quality, cost effective care. Tom has been tireless in his quest to promote pharmaceutical care and the value that the profession brings, by working closely with the broader health care world, and has been especially effective in working with legislators at both the state and federal level."

Temple is the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA), a position he has held since 1979. He serves as CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation and Pharmacy Network of Iowa -- two subsidiary corporations of the IPA. He also serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor for the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa and Drake University.

Temple is a member of several professional organizations APhA, IPA, NASPA and the American Society of Association Executives. Temple's leadership has been recognized through receipt of several awards including APhA's Gloria Neimeyer-Francke Leadership Mentor Award, the University of Illinois' College of Pharmacy Alumnus of the Year Award and University of Iowa College of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumni Award. Temple obtained his Masters in Pharmacy Administration from the University of Iowa and his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Illinois.
